7-1 The study of school counselor’s role perception and role conflict

The purposes of the study are 1) to examine the role perceptions of administrators, teachers, school counselors, parents as well as students of elementary schools toward school counselors; 2) to examine the role conflict among school counselors; 3) to compare the perceptions among different research participants regarding the roles and functions of school counselors.
The research participants included administrators, teachers, school counselors, parents as well as students of elementary schools (N=1844). The Role Questionnaire designed by the researcher, which included the role conflict of school counselors, were administered and analyzed. The major findings were:
1.Among 52 roles indicated by the Role Questionnaire, most of the participants agreed that there were at least 40 roles which were the primary roles that school counselors should play.
2.Most of the perceptions of the participamts were quite consistent.
3.In general, the school counselors, disregard their sex or professional background, did not have much sense of conflict while performing their roles.
4.There was discrepancy between the perceptions of school counselors and administrators regarding how to support and take care of traumatized children.
5.Almost all the female participants, whatever their background were, had more positive attitude in the roles and functions of school counselors.
6.The fifth grade students had less clear idea about the counseling or guidance.
