1994 2-1 The Study on the Influence of Counselor Self-cognition on Counseling Relationship and Counselor Behaviors

The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of counselor self-cognition on counseling relationship and counselor behaviors with empirical methods. The subjects were 10 professional counselors. Each of them did 35-40 minutes simulative counseling 4 times, once with a trained client. The counseling process was videotaped and evaluated by the counselor, the client and three raters.The research instruments including:”The Counselor Self-cognition Inventory”(which evaluated three impacts of counselor self-cognition:the global self, the interpersonal self, the counseling self.),”Checklist of Counseling Interaction”,” Checklist of Counseling Intention”,”Checklist of the Counselor Verbal Response Modes”,”The Counselor Strategy Form”, and ”The Session Evaluation Questionnaire". The data were analyzed by canonical relation analysis.

The finding were as follows:(1)The global self has significant correlation with the verbal response modes and the counselor strategy.(2)The interpersonal self has significant correlation with the counseling relationship, the counseling intention, and the verbal response modes.(3)The counseling self has significant correlation with the counselor strategy.(4)The client sense of interview has no significant correlation with the counselor global self, interpersonal self and counseling self, but has significant correlation with counseling relationship and counselor strategy.

The finding of this study not only have been solve one important issue of counseling psychology, but also have significant meanings of counselor training and advanced study.
